چکیده
These high risk conditions are significant predictors of major pediatric developmental problems and place a disproportionate burden of disability on educational and societal resources. The impact of this research and clinical knowledge gained from this study are sizeable, both theoretically and clinically. That is, the challenges faced by families of children with VLBW and BPD illness are not unlike those of other child chronic illnesses and disabilities and as such, information can be generalized to other chronic illnesses. . This study examined of how bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and very low birthweight (VLBW), relative to other medical, neurologic and sociodemographic risk factors, impact cognitive, language, neuropsychological, pulmonary, and behavioral outcomes from birth through 14 years of age. VLBW and BPD births are on the rise in the United States, with more than 62,000 infants born with VLBW and more than 11,000 with BPD annually. Despite increased incidence of BPD and VLBW, there have been few comprehensive longitudinal studies of the health, psychosocial, and long term outcomes of such children. In addition, small sample sizes, the absence of adequate control groups, the lack of regional samples, the failure to control for drug exposure, and the lack of psychosocial assessments limit the conclusions that can be made from prior research.

Development of lung function in very low birth weight infants with or without bronchopulmonary dysplasia: Longitudinal assessment during the first 15 months of corrected age
BACKGROUND Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (< 1,500 g) with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) develop lung damage caused by mechanical ventilation and maturational arrest. We compared functional lung development after discharge from hospital between VLBW infants with and without BPD. METHODS Comprehensive lung function assessment was performed at about 50, 70, and 100 weeks of postmenstru...

OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and very low birth weight (VLBW) on the cognitive and academic achievement of a large sample of 8-year-old children. METHODS Infants who were VLBW and had BPD (n = 98) or did not have BPD (n = 75) and term infants (n = 99) were followed prospectively to age 8. Groups were compared on measures assessing 4 broad areas of funct...
متن کاملSmall thymus at birth: a predictive radiographic sign of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
OBJECTIVE Emerging evidence indicates a relationship between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and chorioamnionitis. Recent data provide evidence of an acute thymic involution in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants and fetuses with histologic chorioamnionitis. We tested the hypothesis that a small thymus detected at birth on the routine chest radiograph is a predictor of BPD in VLBW inf...

UNLABELLED A prospective follow-up of very low birth weight infants (VLBW) with (n = 89) and without (n = 71) bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and Term control children (n = 93) was conducted at 8 years of age. Groups were compared on measures of articulation, receptive and expressive language, verbal and performance IQ, oral motor skills and gross and fine motor skills. The BPD group demonstra...
متن کاملSurvey of one month mortality and morbidity of infants less than 1500 grams admitted to NICU of Shahid Akbarabadi Hospital in Tehran in 1395
Neonates weighing less than 1500 grams (VLBW) consider nearly 4-7% of live births. VLBW infants are more likely to be hospitalized due to their complications. The aim of this study is to determine the rate of recovery, complications and predictive factors of VLBW neonate’s mortality. A cross-sectional study in NICU of Shahidakbar-Abadi Hospital in Tehran during the year 1395 was performed on...
